Day 2 - A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum...

Day 2- insane!

It is so hard to grasp the fact that we are literally standing and exploring ancient civilizations. Today we started to grey skies and a few drops. We boarded our hop on hop off tour to take us through the sites. Even looking out the window is astounding and leaves you in awe. We took the bus around the route but decided to hop off near the Trevi fountain. We walked through the cobblestone streets popping into shops on our way past the fountain.

The fountain offered a few special wishes for Jules. 🤞  The myth of Trevi Fountain says: if you throw one coin you will return to Rome, if you throw two coins you will fall in love with an attractive Italian, if you throw three coins  you will marry the person that you met.

Julie Testing Out The Trevi Fountain Myth

After the fountain we trekked towards the tour office. Our tour was an underground tour of the Colosseum followed by Palatine Hill and the Forum with lunch in between.  Today we had crazy paninis (= sandwiches) for lunch. I also had my first gelato - delicious!!!

The underground colosseum is the best preserved part of the Colosseum. Trying to grasp the advanced engineering and implementation during 80 AD is mind blowing. Buildings still standing, and functional sewers and aqueducts is truly incredible! We saw where wild animals were kept and how they were lifted to the stage/ arena. The sheer amount of travertine used to construct the structure is crazy.

Inside The Colosseum

Seeing the sophistication of this ancient world truly is inspiring!!

Forum And Palatine Hill

After our unbelievable tour (highly recommend Show Me Italy Underground Colosseum Tour - Thanks Magda!!!) we headed back to the hustle and bustle for dinner. Settled on an amazing restaurant - Il Nuovo Faro. The service and atmosphere were the best! We all had pasta - cacio el peppe, lasagna, and gnocchi - all were delicious. We had a few cocktails- wine for E! We met a few other Canadians from Montreal - truly a small world! Tiramisu for dessert- Julie’s first! It was all unbelievable!!

Merlot, Bellini, Limoncello Spritz!!

Two cocktails led to a bit of athletics on the way home. We ended up walking back to our hotel to rest before our Vatican experience tomorrow. Hoping none of us burn up upon entry! 😂
